Punch Needle
Serene started working on her Flourish punch needle series in 2020. The series is based on sketches she drew during this time and it looks at the idea of outgrowing a space but still flourishing and making the most of what you already have.
To make each piece Serene firstly hand dyes all the yarn (sourced from an Australian woollen mill) using natural botanical dyes. She uses different dye baths to get different shades as well as experimenting with dip dyeing and speckling to create effects in the yarn. She enjoys being able to connect to nature with her artwork by using dyes that are derived from plants.
Serene’s punch needle works are currently available to view and purchase through Brunswick Street Gallery, Fitzroy, Australia.
